The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
Do you remember the first time you realized that God answered prayers? For me, this happened soon after I graduated from high school and I attended a Christian conference called Explo 72.
That week I learned how much God was concerned with my needs personally. It was a very hot week in Dallas, Texas, I was exhausted from the busy schedule. One night I got very dizzy and almost passed out. I was immediately taken to a medical tent outside the stadium.
I ended up feeling so bad that I missed my bus going back to Fort Worth, where our group was staying. So the people there began to pray for me, and they asked that God would provide a ride back to Fort Worth.
Soon afterwards a young man named David came down to the medical area. He said, “I don’t know why, but as I was leaving I sensed God telling me to come here and see if anyone needed a ride to Fort Worth.” What an answer to prayer!
Because David saw how sick I was, he phoned his parents, who were missionaries on sabbatical in Fort Worth, to see if I could stay at their house for the remainder of the conference. Of course they said yes. That night as I lay sleeping on their sofa I would wake up and see David sitting in a chair watching to make sure I was going to be okay. I had never seen a young man show Christ-like love before.
I was also able to see a Christian family interact with each other and pray at the dinner table. Because I didn’t grow up in a Christian home I had never seen that before.
As a result of seeing God provide David and his family I made a major decision that week that I would not date or even contemplate marrying a person who didn’t have the strong Christian convictions. That decision changed the course of my life. In 1976 I met that man, also named David, when we both joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ. Three years later he became my husband.
Dave and I have been married for 36 years now. I look back at that week and I wonder why I ever doubt God’s ability to answer prayer.
